Mediterranean : Royal Clipper : Seven night Italian Western Mediterranean Cruise
Natural beauty and 4,000 years of history converge in Italy, Sicily, and the islands of the Mediterranean
Our Mediterranean cruises take you on a journey through sparkling capitals, ancient civilizations and cultured ambience on one of our finest tall ships. Explore Italy with its the soaring mountains, medieval villages and sun-warmed beaches. Our Royal Clipper Mediterranean cruise holidays offer a seven night itinerary through Italy, from Rome's port of Citavecchia, which includes sundrenched Sicily, stops throughout the volcanic Aeolian Islands and routes along Italy's romantic Amalfi coast. Put yourself in a magical place of ancient Roman ruins, idyllic ports and myth-making islands lost in time; where tall cypresses, olive groves and hilltop villages remind you of Italian hill towns; where dancing waters are dotted with white sails and thousands of islands spill like green jewels over the sea; and more precious treasures abound in medieval walled cities that have miraculously survived through centuries of attack and siege. It is a country that is more sea than land; birthplace of generations of sailors and adventurers, including Marco Polo. Here fishermen still bring in the catch every day - and seafood never sees a freezer before being served at your table! This is the enchanted Istrian and Dalmatian Coast of Croatia and it is richly deserving of your discovery. But come quickly. Because others will find it very soon! Join us as we discover an unsurpassed enclave of the Adriatic Sea combining the best of the ancient and new, the alluring archipelagos and coastline of Croatia.
Itinerary
Day 1 -
Civitavecchia, Port of Rome
St. Peter’s, with its breathtaking Sistine Chapel, newly restored to its former glory, the Spanish Steps, where all Rome passes by, the Colosseum, where real gladiators fought to the death, the Pantheon, considered to be the most perfect architectural statement of the ages. Life is not lived if you haven’t been to Rome!
Meals included:
Dinner
Day 2 -
Ponza, Pontine Islands, Italy
The pastel houses of Ponza Town rise in neat terraced rows from the busy harbour where sleekly groomed yachts and ramshackle fishing boats moor side by side. Happily, there are few tourists here, so it’s a delight to wander through the unspoiled town. Then find yourself a private bit of beach, there are lots of them, and enjoy the feel of warm sand and cool clear water lapping your toes.
Meals included:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 -
Sorrento, Capri (evening), Italy
Sorrento’s city walls rise straight out of the sea and they hold many charms within. Sorrento is located on the lovely Amalfi Coast, one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal regions and overlooks the Bay of Naples. Optional excursions might include taking a trip back in history in Pompeii, where the ashen remains of ancient Romans lie frozen in time.
Meals included:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 -
Amalfi, Italy
What is it about the Amalfi Coast that inspires such rapture? From the time of the Romans, who had grand villas here, Amalfi has been a preferred destination for the wealthy and the artistic. During the Middle Ages, Amalfi was a powerful republic of 70,000 people, rivalling nearby Ravello. For a sense of Amalfi’s medieval glory, wander through the grand Duomo, containing the remains of St. Andrew. Or visit Ravello, where the annual music festival is held, or nearby Positano, said to be the most beautiful town in the Mediterranean
Meals included:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 -
Taormina, Sicily
Barreling under full sail through the narrow Strait of Messina separating Italy’s toe from the island of Sicily is a thrill beyond comparison. Past Scylla and Charybdis, where rock and whirlpool almost claimed Ulysses. And then you arrive in lovely Taormina, and your day is perfectly completed. Perched on the shoulder of Mt. Etna, Taormina inspired Goethe to say that “It is the greatest work of art and nature.” The whispers of ancient ghosts in the Greek Theatre would agree!
Meals included:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 -
Lipari, Stromboli (eve. cruising only), Aeolian Islands, Italy
Italy’s seven volcanic Aeolian Islands are obviously a place favoured by the Gods. Just off the north coast of Sicily, they are a favourite destination for adventurers and visiting yachts, which anchor in the little harbours indenting the coastline. In Lipari, climb narrow streets to the medieval castello and enjoy a secluded beach as Star Clipper sails past Isola Strómboli, watch the sky for frequent volcanic fireworks
Meals included:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7 -
At Sea
Enjoy a day at sea, on one of our graceful ships as they fly along the waves, just like the legendary clippers of a century and a half ago. And this is as much an adventure on highly evolved relaxation as it is tradition.
Meals included:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8 -
Civitavecchia, Port of Rome
Enjoy your last breakfast on board, before you depart to the airport for your flight home.
