Europe : Discovering Portugal & Spain

Start your journey in Portugal and travel the Douro Valley through to Spain.

DISCOVERING PORTUGAL One of the oldest countries in Europe, Portugal, gained its independence in 1143. It holds a long-standing alliance with Great Britain and has been part of the European Union since 1986. It is no wonder, with its shores on the Atlantic coastline, that their culture and architecture is a wondrous mixture of Roman, Greek and Muslim influence and tradition. Many historic villages offer the embodiment of these strong influences with grand monuments, baroque monasteries, and romantic castles that can be seen along the Douro River route. Village cuisine is simple, yet flavourful. Seafood dishes are a staple, lamb and cheese are delicacies, and fresh and cured pork is served everywhere. Of course, with every great dish there is a wine to match; but the Portuguese also enjoy a nice cup of coffee and offer it in a variety of ways. Portugal is a beautiful country with a rich and tumultuous history, but it is the people who will truly amaze you. You will never forget how genuinely warm and welcoming they are.

DISCOVERING SPAIN Spain occupies 85% of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with Portugal in Southwest Europe. Due to its location, it has become a melting pot that bridges the cultures of North and South Europe and Africa. Yet, even in modern times, Spain continues to embrace some old world traditions. A handshake and a kiss on both cheeks remains the customary greeting and if a family invites you into their home, a small gift in appreciation of their hospitality is customary. Beachwear should not be worn in public and attire should be conservative when visiting small villages and churches. Substance best describes Spanish cuisine. The best way to sample the region specialties is to order an array of Tapas (small snacks) which are served everywhere and at anytime. As for the wine, Spain has some of the best. The Castilla y León region isn’t a famous wine region yet, but red wines are well known throughout Spain.
